Sunrise SC 2004 Black opened up the 2016-17 season with a remarkable championship title run at the Spirit Kickoff Classic in Pennsylvania. The Spirit Kickoff Classic is the second largest soccer tournament in Pennsylvania attracting more than 450 high caliber teams. Sunrise SC 2004 Black was the only Florida team that participated in tournament that featured teams from as far south as Virginia, as far west as Ohio, as far north as Canada, and all points in between.

It was the first out of state tournament for the Sunrise SC 2004 Black team. Sunrise SC opened their first match against Super Nova from Pennsylvania with an impressive 3-0 win. Mikayla Morales opened the scoring in the 9 minute with a blast from just inside the 18 yard box. Romi Witek doubled the lead for Sunrise SC 2004 Black with a carefully placed finish in the 35th minute. The 3-0 win was capped by Mia Young’s 25 yard shot in the 49th minute.

Sunrise SC 2004 Black squared off against 5th ranked YMS (PA) in a game that featured the lone two unbeaten in group play. Sunrise SC 2004 Black took advantage of a giveaway in the final third when Savannah Hydes scored a left footed shot from outside the 18 yard box in the 13th minute. Molly Conn put Sunrise SC 2004 Black up 2-0 in the 44th minute with a breakaway finish. Diana Pon tallied twice in the last 10 minutes of the game to give Sunrise SC Black a 4-0 win.

In the semifinals Sunrise SC 2004 Black faced an undefeated HMMS (PA) team. The match opened with a Sunrise SC goal in the 16th minute. The lead was short lived when HMMS (PA) scored in the 25th minute to spoil a three game shutout streak for Sunrise SC. The game was deadlocked after the full 60 minutes. Sunrise SC 2004 Black pressed in both Overtime sessions, but was unable to score in the extra session. The game came down to penalty kicks which Sunrise SC won 4-2.

The finals of the Spirit Kickoff Classic featured Sunrise SC 2004 Black vs. SJEB (NJ). South Jersey Elite started the game strong with a great goal in the 8th minute of the first half. Sunrise SC 2004 Black leveled the game from a right footed shot from 20 yards out by Laniaya Delvalle in the 26th minute. South Jersey Elite opened the second half with a shot from 15 yards that just nearly got by Sunrise SC goalie Sophia Garcia. Sunrise SC 2004 Black tied the game on a 35 yard free kick by Savannah Hydes in the 49th minute. The game went back and forth the remaining 10 minutes, and then another 10 minutes in Overtime. Like the semifinals Sunrise SC 2004 Black went to a penalty shootout. Sophia Garcia made 3 crucial saves in the shootout while Mikayla Morales scored the 5th and final penalty kick to propel Sunrise SC 2004 Black to the championship.
